The Power of Self-Coaching: The Five Essential Steps to Creating the Life You Want
I just purchased your new book and I’m so excited to start reading. I’m reading the introduction right now and the thought came to me that no other person (meaning no other Doctor/Author) except someone who’s gone through anxiety etc.. could get that precise and come up with these accurate conclusions. It’s cut and dried with you. I like that!! And even then, they wouldn’t be able to put it into words like you do. It’s marvelous, brilliant, and reassuring. Thanks AGAIN!

The unsuspecting reader of this book might be led to believe that the author is the creator of these so-called “self-coaching” techniques, ignoring the existence of the well-known Cognitive Behaviour Therapy originated by Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis.
I have read this book in the context of my programme development research as a science and technology documentary television producer. Even if one manages to disregard the unintelligently preachy tone and oversimplifying approach chosen by the author, it is unfortunate to notice the utter lack of academic rigour and intellectual courtesy exhibited in this book. The author seems to suffer from an obsessive compulsion which prompts him to make unbearably frequent references to “his” “new” therapeutic technique, he labels “self-coaching”; ignoring or forgetting to mention that it is nothing more than a rudimentary explanation of the now well established Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
CBT is never mentioned in the book – not once. The fundamental elements of CBT can be traced two-thousand years back, to Epictetus (c. 50-138 AD) of Phrygia; and more recently in the last century, to its widely acknowledged originators: Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis.
Mr. Luciani’s failure to give due credit to Beck and Ellis, and the vulgar and mercantilist fashion in which the subject is treated in the book are most unfortunate.

Bravo to Dr. Joe for writing such a practicle book on how to effect change, both persoanlly and professionally. Many people live without being fully present in the moment because of habits that alter the full experience of dynamic living. This book has sound steps to identifying blocks to a more highly functional and harmonious living. The 5 steps to personal empowerment are right on target and the way the material is presented is completely non-threatening, insightful and inspirational. I have read both books and use the concepts for my clients as well as for myself personally. Very refreshing and highly recommended reading! Susan Myers, R.N., HNC, LCSW
